Quick Overview
The Mmabana Foundation (MF) is a Non-Governmental and Non-Profit Organisation that was founded 2009 in South Africa (Reg. No. 071-068-NPO in Pretoria under the NPO Act, 1997) as an initiative to support the Mmabana Community Outreach Project (MCOP) in Choma, Zambia founded in 2008 by Nosiku Kalonga
The name “Mmabana” derives from the African language Setswana and means “mother of children”. This definition together with the Christian values of “love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:39) and “let us not love by words and tongue but with action and in truth” (1 John 3:18) serve as a foundation of the MCOP. The MF and MCOP, however, views themselves as a non-discriminating organisation willing to cooperate with and help people from different backgrounds, faith and social status.
WHY we do what we do: “Working towards a just society where all people are free and able to realize their potential and actively participate in their own development, thus sharing the love of God.” The MCOP therefore understands itself as a catalyst for community development by attending to social issues affecting children and youth.
HOW we intend to take actions in order to achieve the WHY:
1. Capacity Building & Endogenous Development
2. Local & Global Networking
3. Community Involvement & Outreach
4. HIV/Aids Awareness & Sex Education
5. Advocacy & Lobbying
WHAT are the programs offered to realize the WHY:
1. Kids Club
2. Youth Empowerment Initiative Program
3. Outreach
4. Socio-economic Justice Training
All of the work done at the MCOP is based entirely on volunteerism. Furthermore, the community involvement and initiative is important to ensure a sustainable and localised adaption of concepts that are needed and useful. This then strengthens the endogenous development process of “in Zambia, from Zambians and for Zambians”.
